Halloween 2016

Halloween season is upon us and it’s always an exciting time at St. Fiach’s! Thanks to the Hole family who donated a few huge pumpkins to us. They were beautifully carved for decoration and Dr. Bennett used the insides to make pumpkin soup! All children dressed up on the final day before the mid-term and there were a few traditional Halloween games played! Enjoy the week off!

Oldcastle Library Visits – October 2016

Our annual visits to Oldcastle Library began on Friday October 7th when 3rd and 4th classes attended a workshop with children’s author, Alan Nolan. Alan shared some stories from his childhood and had the children laughing from beginning to end. He was very engaging with the children and his interaction with them was amazing. Alan also showed the children some of his illustrations and encouraged them to draw some of the characters from his books. We had great fun! Thank you Alan!!

Our 5th and 6th classes visited the library on Thursday October 13th where E.R Murray and Alan Early hosted their workshop. The students were brought on an imaginary journey through time, visiting the Viking era, the Middle Ages and also Georgian and Victorian times. They also had a multiple choice quiz to try and save themselves from the enemies of the times! Thanks a million to the authors for a great workshop!

Finally, our 1st and 2nd classes had a great workshop, on Friday 21st, with The Celtic Rap Scallions. There was some great signing and dancing on view and the children got introduced to some Canadian folk songs. Well done to everyone for taking part!

National Fitness Day 2016

As an Active School, we were delighted to take part in Ireland’s National Fitness Day on September 16th.

All students took part in a skipping competition to see which of Europe’s highest peaks we could climb (1 skip = 1 metre). 1st and 2nd class climbed Ta’Zuta, Malta’s highest point. 3rd and 4th climbed our own Carrauntoohil and 5th and 6th climbed Great Britain’s highest point, Ben Nevis.

We also had some teachers v students competitions. We kicked off with a basketball hoop throwing competition. The teacher’s just shaded this one!! The students got their revenge by defeating the teachers in a penalty shoot-out! Thanks to Mrs. Bennett, Mr. Donohue and Mr. Farrell for being such great sports! Well done to all our students who really got involved especially Conor and Leo who proved to be exceptional shot stoppers! Tremendous fun was had by all!
